Yr 1 & 2 – Mrs Collins – Mam Tor
Dear parents and carers of Key Stage 1 children,
Wow that first term went fast! We have a bumper term of activities planned so hold tight and buckle up for lots of fun in the Smart Sharks classroom.
Out topic before half term is dinosaurs. We will be budding palaeontologists discovering new types of dinosaurs and informing the world about our finds. We will be looking at all sorts of different dinosaur texts and looking at different animals alive today and comparing them to their ancient ancestors. In maths we will be focussing on shape and multiplication and division.
After half term we will be focussing on the recent past and looking at the lives of our parents and grandparents. This will include exploring games and machines from the recent past as well as interviewing a grandparent. We will also be having two focus weeks looking at healthy eating and designing a healthy lunchbox … contents and case. In maths we will be exploring fractions. In addition to this French will be taught on Wednesday afternoons by Madame Wigley.
PE will still be on Monday and Thursday. Your child should have an indoor and outdoor kit which is named and as always please make sure that if your child has long hair that it is tied up and that earrings are removed.
Thank you for supporting your child with their Common Exception Words (tricky words), word pots will be changed weekly once they are learnt. Please continue to support your child in their reading development by listening to them read at least four times a week and marking this in their reading diary. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is for children to practise reading at home, it makes such a difference to their progress and enables them to become much more fluent and access texts independently sooner. We are always looking for people to volunteer to listen to readers so if you can spare an hour a week then let me know.
We also have our bedtime story night for those who can make it. We will be snuggling down with a teddy bear in our PJs with a few special books whilst sipping delicious hot chocolate and there may be a biscuit or two up for grabs if we’re lucky!
Thank you for your continued support, we are all looking forward to working with your children in the term ahead.
